OUR STORY

brief history

The UBC Africa Business Club started in June 2015 and is a registered student-run club of the UBC Alma Mater Society (AMS). Our inaugural event, the 2015 Africa Business Forum was held in November 2015.

We are now in our fifth year of existence and looking to grow our club membership and event offerings.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to promote the Africa business landscape by creating a platform that connects students, academics, and professionals in North America to the economic, political, and social opportunities in Africa.

Club membership is $5 for the year and is open to all UBC students. We seek to create an open and inclusive community where rigorous yet respectful debate and dialogue are encouraged. We do not discriminate based on age, gender, race, income, sexual orientation, or country of origin.

Objectives

  • Promote awareness within UBC and more generally Western Canada about business opportunities on the African continent, with the goal of increasing investment and resource allocation to the continent.
  • Create an environment at UBC for African students and students interested in Africa to come together in both an academic and social setting.
  • Encourage the UBC community to further incorporate African studies into the curriculum across faculties by acknowledging topics such as African history, innovation, case studies, and literature.

The Africa Business Forum (ABF) is the UBC Africa Business Club’s annual flagship event. It is the first student-run conference on Africa enterprise in Western Canada. The ABF congregates international business leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals and students for a day of focused discussion and relationship building.

After a successful event in 2019, the UBC Africa Business Forum is back for the 5th edition of Western Canada’s premium conference on African business! Join us as we converge students, academics, and professionals from Africa and the Diaspora at UBC’s Vancouver campus for a day of learning, ideation and business networking.

This year the Forum theme is “New Frontiers: Integrating Current Models into the Future of Business in Africa”.
